Physics that knows
what you've
forgotten

Eigenowl maps your understanding against every assessment objective in your syllabus, then rebuilds from wherever it breaks down. Mastery fades here over time — just as it does in your head — so what you see is what you actually know.

Every design decision traces to published learning science. Nothing here is based on intuition.

The problem

Why revision feels productive and isn't

You do twenty questions on one topic and get good at that topic — for about a week. You re-read notes you already understand because it feels better than facing the parts you don't. And a question bank has no idea which of those two you're doing.

Eigenowl is built around the uncomfortable version: the topics you avoid, the ones you've quietly forgotten, and the difference between recognising an answer and being able to produce one.

The science behind it

Not adaptive as a buzzword — adaptive as a body of research

Adaptive is the most over-claimed word in education software. Below is exactly what it means here: three findings, what each one says, and where it shows up in the product. The papers are named so you can check them.

Vygotsky · 1978
Zone of Proximal Development
Learning happens fastest at the boundary of what you can and can't do alone. Eigenowl locates that boundary — your ZPD — by tracking mastery across every assessment objective and difficulty level, then selects questions that sit right at your growing edge.

In practice: when you get three right in a row, the next question is harder. When you stall, it steps back rather than repeating.

Ebbinghaus · 1885 · Bjork & Bjork · 2011
Spaced Repetition & Forgetting Curves
Mastery isn't permanent. Without practice, understanding fades — faster than most students expect. Eigenowl models this decay mathematically: mastery scores drop over time, surfacing topics that need revisiting before you've forgotten them completely.

In practice: your mastery score for a topic drops if you don't return to it. Nobody likes watching a number fall. That's the point.

Rohrer & Taylor · 2007 · Rohrer et al. · 2015
Interleaved Practice
Blocked practice — doing 20 questions on the same topic — feels efficient but produces weak long-term retention. Rohrer and Taylor found students who practised mixed problem types scored dramatically higher on delayed tests than those who practised one type at a time — despite performing worse during practice itself. Feeling fluent and being fluent are different things.

In practice: sessions mix topics on purpose. It's harder. That's the finding.

What you actually do here

Four ways to work — one system underneath

Everything you answer moves your mastery score for a specific assessment objective. Nothing here is decorative.

🎯
Practise
Learn mode walks you through weak areas with hints and worked solutions. Practice mode builds fluency. Challenge mode removes the safety net. Every question you answer moves your mastery score for that specific assessment objective.

Sit a real exam
Timed, past-paper style, graded mark point by mark point against Cambridge or IB marking conventions — not a percentage, a breakdown. You see which mark you earned, which you missed, and why. This is the part most platforms can't do, because it needs more than a multiple-choice checker.

Ask Nova
Nova is a Socratic tutor, which means it mostly asks rather than tells. It knows which question you're on and where your mastery is thin, so it can aim at the actual gap rather than explaining from scratch. Available whenever you're stuck — including at 11pm the night before.

Compete, if that helps you
Weekly leaderboards, tiers, badges and streaks, for the people who are motivated by them. Students appear under a nickname, never their real name. If none of this motivates you, it's entirely ignorable.
Optional by design

Covering the major exam boards

Each course is mapped to the official assessment objectives for that syllabus, so a weak area is identified in the same terms your examiner uses.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes — when you sign up, you get access to one free subtopic. This lets you experience the adaptive engine and Nova before committing to a purchase. No payment details required to get started.
You buy access to individual topics, curated topic bundles (at a discount), or the full course (at the best discount). Every purchase gives you three years of access from the day you buy — long enough for a two-year course plus a resit year. If you're revising a month before exams, just buy the topics you need.
Three things, concretely. Mastery decays here, so your scores reflect what you'd remember today rather than what you once managed. Exam answers are graded mark by mark against your board's actual marking conventions, not scored as right or wrong. And the whole selection engine is built on named, published research — listed on this page, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.
Currently: Cambridge IGCSE Physics, IB Diploma Physics HL, IB Diploma Physics SL, and Cambridge A-Level Physics. More curricula are planned. Each course is mapped precisely to the official assessment objectives for that board.
In Exam mode, longer answers — explanations, calculations, structured questions — are graded by AI against the marking conventions for your specific curriculum (Cambridge or IB). Grading is done mark-point by mark-point, not holistically, so you can see exactly which parts of an answer earned credit and which didn't. It's not a pass/fail — it's a breakdown.
Yes. Students from certain regions — including conflict zones and countries with significant economic hardship — receive full free access to the platform. This is applied automatically based on your location when you sign up. If you believe you qualify but weren't granted access, please use the contact form below.
Yes — Eigenowl is fully responsive and works on mobile and tablet browsers. No app download required.
For some things, no. If you want a clear explanation of circular motion, there are excellent free videos, and you should watch them. What free resources don't do is track which assessment objectives you're weak on across a whole syllabus, mark your long-form answers the way an examiner would, or notice that you last touched thermodynamics six weeks ago. Eigenowl is for the second problem, not the first.
Twenty to thirty minutes, a few times a week, will do more than a three-hour session on a Sunday — that's what the spacing research says. The platform is built for short, frequent sessions and doesn't reward marathons.
Student work and mastery scores are visible to the student and their teacher, nobody else. In Samvad, the Arena and anywhere else students see each other, only nicknames appear. Real names are never shown to other students.
